Mat Hunsley

Mat Hunsley is a Newcastle-based songwriter blending folk and alternative influences into an intimate, reflective sound. After years balancing music with medical training, he steps forward with his debut album, supported by the PRS Open Fund.
Rooted in personal and universal themes, his writing invites listeners to slow down and take stock. Inspired in his late teens by artists like Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Bon Iver, he taught himself guitar, exploring open tunings and colourful chords that define his style.
The Things We Need is a personal yet outward‑looking record, balancing family reflection with wider social themes. Its title track, written during a period of overwhelm, anchors the album with the reminder that “though our lives are quite small, they are full of the things we need.'
